STRATFORD, CT – Democratic nominee for State Senate Tony Afriyie announced today that he has reached the program requirements to qualify for the Citizens’ Election Program, just seven days after announcing his candidacy in the special election for the 21st State Senate seat.  A first-time candidate for state office, Afriyie raised over $14,000 and received contributions from over 225 residents of Shelton, Stratford, Monroe, and Seymour. By demonstrating public support for his campaign, he will receive a state campaign finance grant.

“I am grateful to the hundreds of people all over the district and state who believe in our vision for a fairer, more affordable Connecticut and who helped us reach our fundraising goal in just one week,” said Afriyie. “I’m running to bring a fresh perspective and innovative ideas to our state government, and our strong fundraising shows that our campaign is already resonating. Now, we can focus on spending the next 33 days sharing our message with the voters of the 21st District.”

The 21st State Senate District includes Shelton and parts of Seymour, Monroe, and Stratford. The special election will take place on Tuesday, February 25th, with four consecutive days of early voting beginning Thursday, February 20th.
